One of the gems in the vintage is the 2015 Vacqueyras les Genestes, which is 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, that’s brought up all in concrete tanks. This broad, sexy, full-bodied beauty offers terrific notes of ripe black cherries, mulled blackberries, violets and incense, with building tannin and a blockbuster finish. It will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and drink well for a decade.

One of the leading estates in Vacqueyras is unquestionably Domaine des Amouriers, which is run today by the young Igor Chudzikiewicz and Patrick Gras. They make a single white based on Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Clairette (there’s a tiny amount of Viognier), and three red cuvees: Cuvee Signature, Les Genestes and Truffières. I believe they made a single cuvee in 2014 and it’s certainly a success in the difficult vintage. The two 2015s I was able to taste are gorgeous wines.
