I tasted different barrel samples of the 2013 Nuits St Georges Clos des Fôrets Saint Georges 1er Cru according to soil type and altitude, since they differ so much in this monopole. The final blend demonstrated a more complex bouquet than the Clos de l’Arlot: a mixture and red and black fruit, minerals and a subtle marine influence. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, a silver thread of acidity and real density and panache on the finish. There is quite marked difference between the two monopoles this year, this certainly the better. 

Someone quipped that it was "musical chairs" in Nuits Saint Georges at the moment, with winemaker Jacques Devauges departing for a plum job at Clos de Tart and Géraldine Godot taking his place after a successful tenure at Alex Gambal. Jacques has stayed on at Domaine de l'Arlot until 2015 so that he can give Géraldine time to settle in at the domaine. I took the opportunity to speak with her after tasting through the 2013s. One could sense a little trepidation in this new role, never a bad sign. But I found her track record at Gambal impressive so she has little to worry about. She expressed the importance of balancing an adherence to tradition at the domaine with printing her own personality upon the wines. Meanwhile, Jacques' valedictory vintage continues an improvement that I have detected over the last three or vintages. I used to fine a little rawness and greenness in the wines, but this now seems to have been addressed, and they are much better as a result.
