The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the other cuvées. Underneath though, lies intense and quite voluminous red berry fruit, later rose petals, a touch of woodland coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with quite high-toned entry, vivacious blueberry fruit mixed with cassis and orange pith, then closing in quickly on a structure and grippy finish (it finished its malolactic not until September so this would explain this). It will require several years in bottle. It is not quite as audacious as the 2015 Malconsorts, but certainly a prince to that king.

Sebastien Cathiard escorted me through his 2016s in his cold cellar in December (his “caves” seems to be cooler than others). Fortunately the barrel samples were just warm enough to be tasted, likewise the four bottles served blind afterwards where my blind tasting skills were found wanting, save for identifying the second as a Bourgogne Rouge, which is always a worry. I mean, what if it turned out to be his Romanée-Saint-Vivant? Would he ever let me return? Sebastien was relatively unscathed by the frost compared to his colleagues in Chambolle-Musigny, though not completely. His Nuits Saint-Georges was reduced to a single barrel and his Chambolle-Musigny was also severely reduced in terms of quantity. The holdings in Vosne-Romanée were only marginally affected, though he was open about mildew being a large problem and costing him another 30% of bunches in some places. He commenced the harvest on 28 September and put the secateurs down on 30 October, commenting upon the good condition of the fruit. He remarked how amazing it was to find the ripeness levels almost consistent between frosted vines, whose growth cycle had caught up with those vines unaffected. He also finds the 2016s to be classic in style, very “gourmand”, perhaps more approachable than the 2015s with very good acidity levels (pH after malolactic are in around 3.4.) This was an impressive set of wines from Cathiard. More prudent approaches to new oak have permitted the terroir to shine through a lot more in recent vintages. They tend to be slightly richer in style with slightly more emphasis on the black side of the fruit spectrum, but the purity of the fruit cannot be denied.
