The 2014 Kiedricher Grafenberg Riesling trocken GG combines the fine and highly elegant Riesling fruit of the Klosterberg with the finesse-full and precise purity of the Gräfenberg phyllite terroir. Piquant and complex on the palate with great finesse and coolish precision, this is the aristocrat among the dry Weil Rieslings; its length is lovely, salty and full of tension. Great purity and elegance, as well as great aging potential. So much delicacy here and purity, so vital and elegant, well balanced. The length is not due to the alcohol, but the acidity and salinity. 

Wilhelm Weil likes the 2014 vintage because his wines combine the attraction of a cool vintage with fully ripe grapes. He names three crucial advantages for his thesis that his top vineyards Turmberg, Klosterberg and Gräfenberg performed very well in this rainy year. The steepness of the vineyards protected the roots from water stress; the organic farming caused more healthy and robust berry skins; and no fertilization. "We had only a little botrytis, what was excellent for our dry wines, but results in very small quantities of sweet wines," Wilhelm Weil said. None of the musts had to be chaptalized, even the must for the Estate Riesling had Spätlese quality, he went on. The extract levels are also very high in 2014 and that's why Weil prefers the 2014 to the 2013 vintage. "The 2014s are between the poles of body/extract and a coolish raciness, which is perfectly integrated."
Regarding the dry wines, I agree. Although team Weil managed to produce all predicates except of Eiswein, the 2014 vintage seems to be really great -- most of all for the dry wines. I was, on a good level, slightly disappointed by the sweet predicates though. Except the excellent Beerenauslese from the Gräfenberg, I found them less precise than usual and somewhat diffuse on nose and palate when I tasted them at the end of October at the Domaine. The dry Rieslings, however, were fully convincing, starting with the very good and characterful estate Riesling and ending with the outstanding Turmberg Erste Lage, and certainly the exceptional Gräfenberg Grosses Gewächs. My personal tip is the 2014 Kiedricher Riesling, which delivers a seriously complex character at a reasonable price.
