The 2014 Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese #5 is very clear, deep and fresh in its mineral expression that intertwines the flinty Scharzhofberger terroir flavors with white stone fruit aromas. This is piquant and extremely well focused Riesling from one of the greatest Riesling terroirs on planet wine. The solidity and mineral complexity of the Spätlese #5 is remarkable. A great wine!
"We started picking 2.5 days before the rain came on October 7, 8 and 9. We harvested without pause and were ready October 16," says Egon Müller, adding, "Perhaps we should have begun earlier but we were right to pick so quickly. During the rain, the acidity got lost and we experienced a similar situation like 2006. We have saved our Spätlesen before the rain, the Scharzhof Riesling during the rain and the Kabinett after the rain, whereas the Auslese was picked on the very last day." The quantity was "comparatively good," at least it was more than 2012 and 2013, but "we ended up with 27 or 28 hectoliters per hectare." Good news: The 2015 vintage yielded 30 hectoliters per hectare, but includes all the predicates except of Eiswein.
