The brilliant 2012 Chardonnay Estate (740 cases) also spent 13 months in barrel (40% new) and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. In 2012, the Estate Vineyard was 7 years of age, and is planted with the Old Wente selection known as the Hyde clone as well as some of the Mt. Eden selection from that iconic winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Elegant as well as powerful, this beautiful Chardonnay exhibits notes of lemon custard, spring flowers, citrus blossoms, orange marmalade, melons and white peaches. The acidity is crisp and well-integrated, and the overall impression is one of beautiful, full-bodied, aromatic and persistent richness. Enjoy it over the next 7-8 years.

As I have written in the past, this is a beautiful partnership between owner Kerry Murphy and the brilliant winemaker Andy Smith. Approaching its 20th anniversary, the breadth of high-quality, complex Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs as well as a Viognier and Syrahs they have consistently produced is stunning. The Pinot Noirs generally spend between 11 and 13 months on their fine lees in various percentages of new oak, ranging from a low of 40% for the Russian River cuvée to as high as 58% for the Ryan. The fruit is typically destemmed, although in certain vineyards and vintages, partial whole cluster fermentation is employed. These are all brilliant wines with a Côte de Nuits-like earthy/forest floor character dominating plum, sassafras and berry flavors. The alcohol levels tend to be between 14.2% and 14.5%. DuMOL fashions three noteworthy Syrahs which probably receive less attention than they should because of the winery’s high visibility and credibility for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Prices may appear high, but when you consider that Burgundy wines of a similar quality sell for nearly twice as much, the prices are obviously more attractive. According to Andy Smith, 2012 was one of DuMOL’s greatest vintages, and after tasting the wines, I agree. My instincts continue to suggest that this winery is still under consumer’s radar. I find it difficult to understand why that should be given the spectacular quality that has emerged from DuMOL for over a decade.

2013 - 2020

I tasted one 2012, a barrel sample of the 2012 Chardonnay DuMol Estate, of which there should be 700 cases produced versus the normal 435 to 470 in the less generous years of 2011 and 2010. This is a potentially awesome Chardonnay possessing a similar character to the 2010, just more flamboyant and extroverted, even as a barrel sample. It should age effortlessly for 5-7 years. (Not yet released) Since its founding in 1996, DuMol has been one of the superstar wineries of the entire California North Coast. They primarily focus on gorgeous Burgundian-styled Chardonnays from cool micro-climates as well as Pinot Noirs, with the added attraction of one Viognier and one or two Syrahs. They have been consistent from the beginning with winemaker Andy Smith, who has a brilliant record not only at DuMol, but at several other estates where he is the full-time winemaker, particularly the Napa Valley estate of Larkmead, just north of St. Helena. All five 2011 Chardonnays I tasted merit serious attention from consumers. Forget the difficulties of this vintage as DuMol came through with flying colors. All of the 2011 Pinot Noirs were harvested before the heavy rains fell in October, except for the Cuvee Ian, which was completely declassified. The three vintages of Syrah Eddie’s Patch I tasted come from a vineyard called Hoppe-Kelly, which is planted in red soils southeast of Healdsburg, near Chalk Hill. Tel. (925) 254-8922
