The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains has a succinct, mineral-driven bouquet with wet limestone intermixed with red cherries, orange blossom and a touch of apricot jam. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins: pure red cherry and strawberry fruit, a silver thread of acidity and just a dab of spice lending another dimension toward the finish. This nudges the Les Saint Georges ’13 as Chevillon’s best wine.

Bertrand Chevillon was “en forme” when I visited him at his domaine in the suburbs of Nuits Saint Georges. Unlike last year, when I was simply unable to locate his winery, this time I was punctual and received no reprimand. He enthused about his 2013 for good reason because he, together with his brother Denis, produced a clutch of great wines in this challenging vintage. Just like elsewhere, his old vines suffered more than the younger and in the worst affected parcels he lost around 40% of the crop due to poor flowering. He picked October 3-11 and matured his premier crus in around 30% new wood, due to be bottled in April 2015. I felt that these wines were nimble, bright and tensile. More linear than the 2012s last year, they appear to be born with plenty of energy and animation, each expressing their terroirs with style. Price have crept up in recent years, but overall they still represent decent value considering the quality and longevity.
