From a 26-year-old parcel, the 2016 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese #10 is dense and flinty on the deep and concentrated nose. On the palate, this is a lush and mouth-filling, piquant and salty Auslese with a grippy, still-nervous finish. Quite sweet. Tasted March 2018.
Oliver Haag is "very satisfied" with his series of 2016s. "The wines are classic Mosel Rieslings in terms of elegance, finesse and fruit expression. The 2016s are very precise, well balanced and highly stimulating." The quantity, he says, was still acceptable. "During the rainy spring, we didn't do any more plant protecting sprayings than in previous years. Peronospora wasn't such a big deal here. Our yields were already reduced during the flowering, so there was not much fruit set anyway." However, I have rarely tasted a finer and more homogeneous collection here since Oliver Haag took over the lead from his father Wilhelm. The 2016s are marvelous and from one of the finest collections I have tasted this year along the Mosel. Namely, the Juffer Sonnenuhr selections are incredibly fine, and I can only recommend to grab whatever you can find from the 2016s. These are super attractive and balanced Riesling with unrivaled finesse and elegance. The 2016 proves impressively that the Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr is one of the finest vineyards along the Mosel. I can't believe the finesse and elegance of the 2016s will be rivaled any time soon. Fritz Haag's 2016s have everything you need for a long lasting love affair.
